Male Hair Loss
Male hair loss is fairly common. It involves losing hair where it often grows, especially on the head. The most common is androgenic alopecia, otherwise known as male pattern baldness. Obviously since men have a whole category named after them baldness most often is found in men. While some women do go bald, you’ll find the percentages much heavier on the men’s side. Even though you all want to look exactly like Homer Simpson, it can be embarrassing and make us wear hats or do the old comb over, but what causes it and what can we do to fight this thing.
Well the average person grows about twenty follicles a day and baldness causes you to lose about 100 strands a day. This is staggering to say the least. It does not seem that environmental factors affect hair loss. It seems it’s more of a genetic problem. It appears to start with the receding hair line and move its way back to that wonderful bald head we all know and love. This hair moving back on top is caused by a powerful sex hormone that all men have. DHT can affect hair on the head and on the prostate. Male pattern baldness can begin as early as puberty.
There are several other kinds of baldness we won’t go into, but needless to say they are varied and rare. There are too many theories on baldness to count. The list goes on and on. I’ll briefly mention a few and then we’ll talk about what we can do. Sexual maturity is one. In some primates a bigger forehead and baldness is a sign of status and maturity. Another is that it was developed when aggression and risk-taking decrease and nurturing increases. One theory is that people with hair loss are less socially mature.
Enough of all of this, what can we do to stop it. That’s what you’re here for right. Well there are plenty of ways to either stop or grow hair back. There are always the topical creams and what not. There are also propecia and other products you take orally. There’s follicular unit transplant, which is when a surgeon takes hair from the sides and back of your head where hair is the thickest and places them in the bald spots a few strands, usually 1-4, at a time.
Then there are some older methods of stretching skin and actually removing some of the bald skin in areas. The skin with hair is then stretched over where the old bald skin used to be. It can cause bad scarring and headaches. It can be managed with extra strength Tylenol. There is also a method of laser surgery bringing the blood and therefore the follicles up to the skin.
The thing is guys, don’t be down about it. There is a lot of research being done a lot of remedies being developed. One day you will not have to worry about this any longer. For now, take off your baseball cap and wear that shiny chrome happily!
