Some of the brand name hair loss medications are Rogaine, Propecia and Avodart. Minoxidil (more popularly known as Rogaine) and finasteride - known as Propecia hair restoration can be effective in hair loss prevention, and may even help to re-grow hair for some men. The problem is, once you begin using Rogaine or Propecia for hair restoration, you have to continue using these products indefinitely. In case you discontinue their use, any new hair will just fall out.

The average hair loss treatment takes 6 months to begin working and sometimes up to twenty-four months before the target rejuvenation is reached. Shedding has become a problem in the early stages of some of these medications so this is the reason it sometimes takes a bit of time for them to work.

Of course there are always surgical ways to treat baldness. There is the ever popular and very growing use of follicular unit transplantation where the patient’s own hair is taken from the sides and back of the head and transplanted in the thinning or bald areas. This procedure does have its drawbacks however. There is minimal scarring; sometimes shedding and you run the risk of bruising and swelling. Hair may thin out after this procedure however; it will grow back thicker than before. There is also scalp reduction where skin is taken from the head and the left over skin is sutured together to get rid of the bald areas.

The final treatment is laser treatment that is slowly taking over the industry of hair loss treatment. They basically work by drawing blood, therefore, the follicles up to the scalp. This only covers a few areas of hair loss treatments; there are also alternative ways to treat it such as natural oils, vitamins and caffeine.

All of these are proven to work, just not as well as all of the mentioned treatments. If you’re thinking of surgery make sure you talk with your doctor before doing it or before taking any sort of medications. It never hurts, however, to use the many natural and over the counter drugs for baldness, you do need to talk to your doctor about over the counter medications as well, especially if you are on other medications or are pregnant.
